TAT SUPPORTS MEKONG ART AND CULTURE PROJECT
A Two Year Art Collaboration Across Southeast Asia August 2006 – August 2008

The Mekong Art and Culture Project is a two-year collaboration of leading art institutes across Southeast Asia including Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.

Designed to expand and promote the exchange of contemporary art and culture within the Mekong region, the project aims to “encourage the contemporary art and culture movement as well as develop valuable learning-community-based experiences within the region”.

The project has been sponsored by The Rockefeller Foundation Southeast Asia Regional Office, the principal sponsor, since August 2006.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is proud to be one of the official sponsors of The Mekong Art and Culture Project. TAT has long recognised the importance of the Greater Mekong Subregion and the potential for collaboration between art institutes and artists within the region. Following the official launch, TAT expressed confidence that The Mekong Art and Culture Project will provide yet another attractive reason for Thais and overseas visitors to travel around Thailand. This is reflected in TAT’s new destination marketing campaign theme – Thailand Unforgettable: Why settle for ‘memorable’ when you could have ‘unforgettable’.

The two-year art collaboration incorporates six activities and spans four countries and eight art institutions across the Mekong region. The participating art institutes are:

  • Chiang Mai University (Thailand)
  • College of Arts, Hue University (Vietnam)
  • Hanoi University of Fine Arts (Vietnam)
  • Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts (Vietnam)
  • Mahasarakham University (Thailand)
  • National Faculty of Fine Arts (Lao PDR)
  • Royal University of Fine Arts (Cambodia)
  • Silpakorn University (Thailand)

Art production and art education will be conducted through various forms of creative activities. They include the following:

  • Workshops

The Mekong Printmaking Workshop 2007 in Chiang Mai, Thailand,
    January 20-30, 2007*
Lacquer painting workshop in Hue, Vietnam, in April 2008

  • Art camps

Art on the Beach, at Mu Koh Surin, Thailand in 2007
Candle Festival Art Camp, Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand in 2007

  • Curatorial and Exhibition Project

Curatorial workshops in four countries in March-April 2007
Travelling exhibitions in four countries in 2008

  • Research grants and seminar awards
  • Master of Fine Arts Scholarships (MFA)
  • Visiting lectures

The Mekong Art and Culture Project has a comprehensive commercial sponsorship and partnership programme on offer that enables international and domestic companies in the region to integrate with this challenging and creative initiative.

The Rockefeller Foundation Southeast Asia Regional Office is the project’s principal sponsor. The foundation’s Southeast Asia Regional Programme, based in the Bangkok office, aims to contribute to the more equitable development in the Greater Mekong Subregion by addressing the impacts of rapid regional integration on society, culture and vulnerable groups.

Other official sponsors are Thailand’s Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Ministry of Culture, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Horse, Paul Poole (South East Asia) Co., Ltd., and Silpakorn Pradit Colors. Art4d, Life by The Nation and MTV Networks Asia (Thailand) and NEXT FM 94.5 MHz are the official media partners.

THE MEKONG PRINTING WORKSHOP 2007
At the Faculty of Arts, Chiang Mai University
January 20-30, 2007*

The aims of the workshop are to transfer technical knowledge of printmaking arts and to strengthen the capacity of the Mekong-region-based art communities in both theoretical and practical aspects of printmaking.

Two important lectures will be presented as part of the workshop: Thai Contemporary Printmaking, led by Assistant Professor Somporn Rodboon, and Printmaking with Natural, Non-Toxic Colours, led by well-known printmaking artist, Yanwit Kunjaethong.

An introduction and demonstration of woodcut and screen printing will also be arranged. The use of Thai local materials, such as hand-made mulberry paper (kradaad sa) will also be introduced.

The Mekong Printing Workshop 2007 is open to all creative individuals, groups and organizations based in the Mekong Region. However there are only five places available. To participate or to request additional information, please write to:

Introducing the Faculty of Arts, Chiang Mai University (CMU)

The Faculty of Arts at Chiang Mai University conducts its education in various creative fields and supports research projects, promotes art and culture and provides academic services related to art and culture in society.

The Faculty of Arts’ Department of Printmaking was established in 1985 and provides a variety of printmaking classes and workshops for its student and the public. Additionally, the department has developed several student and tutor exchange programmes with art institutions in Thailand and abroad.

The main focus of the department is on the technical development of printmaking as one of the effective means of making art ‘speak’. The printmaking techniques taught range from Relief Printing (woodcut and related methods), Intaglio Printing (etching, dry-point and engraving) to Stencil Printing (stencils, silk screens and related methods).
